Test-taking strategy — answer the question that's actually being asked
Lesson 3 of 4 in NCLEX-RN & REx-PN Exam Prep for IENs · 22 minutes
Two candidates with the same content knowledge can have very different exam outcomes. The difference is test-taking strategy. This lesson covers the patterns that produce more correct answers per question.
What you'll learn
- Apply the priority frameworks (Maslow, ABC, safety first)
- Use 'rule out' approach effectively
- Recognize question stems that signal specific approaches
- Manage time and pacing
From the lesson
NCLEX-RN and REx-PN questions are written in a specific style. They test reasoning more than memory. Knowing the strategies that fit the format adds 5-10% to most candidates' performance — sometimes the difference between pass and fail.
1. Read the question carefully
The question itself (the part right before the answer choices) tells you what to do.
• 'Which is the FIRST action?' — looking for the priority. • 'Which is the BEST response?' — looking for therapeutic communication. • 'Which is most APPROPRIATE?' — looking for the standard/expected. • 'Which would the nurse expect to see?' — clinical assessment. • 'Which finding is the priority?' — most concerning issue.
