Technical interview patterns — Canadian engineering roles
Lesson 2 of 3 in Engineering Job Search & Technical Interviewing · 24 minutes
Canadian engineering interviews follow specific patterns — behavioural questions, technical scenarios, design challenges, sometimes coding. This lesson covers what to expect and how to prepare.
What you'll learn
- Prepare for the standard Canadian engineering interview
- Use STAR for behavioural questions
- Walk through technical scenarios methodically
- Negotiate offers professionally
From the lesson
Canadian engineering interviews are predictable in structure but rigorous in content. Most have 3-5 stages: phone screen, technical interview, behavioural interview, panel/team interview, sometimes written tests. This lesson covers the patterns and how IEEs prepare effectively.
1. The interview stages
Stage 1: Recruiter / phone screen (30-45 minutes): • Background, role match, motivation. • Salary expectations (often). • Visa/status confirmation. • Filtering — not yet evaluating engineering depth.
Stage 2: Technical interview (60-90 minutes): • Engineering-specific questions. • May include design problems. • Often with engineering manager + technical lead. • Tests core engineering knowledge.
