Incident response communication — coordinating during a breach

Lesson 2 of 4 in Cybersecurity Vocabulary & Incident Communication · 22 minutes

Cybersecurity incidents require fast, structured communication across teams. This lesson covers IR communication patterns, escalation, and stakeholder updates.

What you'll learn

  • Lead incident response communications
  • Coordinate cross-functional team during breach
  • Update executives and external stakeholders
  • Document incident for post-mortem

From the lesson

Cybersecurity incidents are high-stress, high-stakes events. Communication failure during incidents causes more damage than the incident itself. Strong IR communication is structured, calm, and coordinated. This lesson covers the patterns IEPs need.

Standard IR lifecycle (NIST SP 800-61):

1. Preparation: • Documented IR plan. • Team contacts. • Tools and access ready. • Tabletop exercises. • Communication: pre-defined escalation paths and stakeholder lists.

2. Detection and Analysis: • Initial alert investigation. • Determining if real incident. • Initial scoping. • Communication: SOC analyst → IR team → escalation criteria for major incidents.
