Provincial regulators and WES — the starting point
Lesson 1 of 4 in Credential Evaluation & Provincial Certification · 22 minutes
Teaching certification is provincial in Canada, and each regulator decides for itself what credential evaluation it needs. OCT (Ontario) and Alberta Education assess your credentials directly — no WES report required. This lesson is the navigation map: who certifies in each province, what WES, IQAS, and TQS actually do, and the one rule that protects your money.
What you'll learn
- Identify the regulator for your target province
- Understand what WES, IQAS, and TQS actually do — and what none of them does
- Plan the document-gathering phase
- Apply the universal rule: never buy an evaluation until the regulator asks for it in writing
From the lesson
There is no single 'Canadian teaching licence.' Each province has its own regulator, its own application process, and its own bridging requirements. Many internationally educated teachers (IETs) assume the first step is buying a WES credential evaluation — and for the two biggest provinces, that assumption is wrong and expensive. The Ontario College of Teachers and Alberta Education each assess your credentials themselves. This lesson is the map: who certifies where, what the evaluation services actually do, and the one rule that protects you from wasted fees.
