CFE strategy — case-writing under time pressure

Lesson 2 of 3 in CPA PEP & CFE — Structure and Strategy · 22 minutes

The CFE is the final hurdle: three consecutive days, ~13 hours of written cases. Passing it is a separate skill from technical knowledge — it's case-writing strategy. This lesson maps the three days correctly and gives you the playbook.

What you'll learn

  • Map the three CFE days correctly — what each day tests and how each is assessed
  • Apply The CPA Way, CPA Canada's official case-writing methodology
  • Manage time differently on the Day 2 depth marathon and the Day 3 breadth sprint
  • Write for the marker and avoid the classic failure modes

From the lesson

The CFE is graded by markers — experienced CPAs reading hundreds of responses. They're looking for specific things: depth in your role, breadth across competencies, and clear, organized communication. But before any writing technique helps you, you need an accurate map of the exam itself, because the three days are deliberately different tests. Day 2 is a depth marathon with generous time; Day 3 is a breadth sprint where time pressure peaks. Candidates who treat all three days the same plan the wrong exam. This lesson is the strategy, built on the correct map.

1. The CFE format — three days, three different tests

The CFE runs three consecutive days, roughly 13 hours of written cases in total.
