Nadia: Hey, Raj. Do you have a minute? I need some advice about something.
Raj: Sure, what's going on?
Nadia: My landlord just told me the rent is going up by $200 a month starting in June. I can barely afford what I'm paying now.
Raj: That's a lot. How much are you paying right now?
Nadia: $1,500 for a one-bedroom. With the increase, it'll be $1,700. That's more than half my take-home pay.
Raj: Is the increase legal? I thought there were rent control rules in Ontario.
Nadia: I looked it up. My building was built in 2020, so it's exempt from rent control. The landlord can raise it by any amount as long as they give 90 days' notice.
