Mila, Vector, Amii — Canada's AI research hubs
Lesson 1 of 3 in The Canadian AI Ecosystem · 22 minutes
Canada's AI research strength is concentrated in three institutes: Mila (Montreal), Vector (Toronto), Amii (Edmonton). They're connected through CIFAR. This lesson explains their work and how IEPs interact with them.
What you'll learn
- Identify the three major Canadian AI research institutes
- Distinguish research roles from industry roles
- Understand how research connects to Canadian AI industry
- Plan whether research is the right path for you
From the lesson
Canada produced three of modern AI's foundational figures — Geoffrey Hinton (Toronto), Yoshua Bengio (Montreal), Richard Sutton (Edmonton). The federal government invested through CIFAR's Pan-Canadian AI Strategy, and the result is world-class AI research concentrated in Montreal, Toronto, and Edmonton. Most IEPs won't work directly in research — but understanding the ecosystem helps you navigate Canadian AI more strategically.
1. Mila — Quebec AI Institute (Montreal)
Founded: 1993 (originally the LISA Lab); rebranded as Mila in 2017 with major government investment.
Founder: Yoshua Bengio (one of the 'Godfathers of Deep Learning,' 2018 Turing Award; now a leading voice on AI safety).
